Young people throughout the Capital Region sprang into action Friday. More than one thousand people along with General Electric volunteers tackled 100 projects for charitable agencies as part of National Youth Service Day.

As an added bonus for their efforts, the volunteers were joined by 2004 Olympic gold medal gymnast Paul Hamm. Hamm said... click here to read more and watch the clip.

MONEY Magazine asked Morgan and Paul Hamm what they would give as gifts. "I want to focus on giving gifts people can use and get something out of," says Paul Hamm. Brother Morgan adds, "I look for gifts that give people a little push -- like exercise balls or weights -- if they need to get off their butts."

These are their picks for gifts:

Aquabells
Price: $50

Just because the Hamms are always traveling to meets doesn't mean they stop training. Fill these collapsible travel weights with water from the hotel tap for on-the-go dumbbells that can weigh as much as 16 pounds each. At paragonsports.com.

Everlast Medicine Balls
Price: $30 to $50

Paul says tossing medicine balls is key in improving upper-body strength. "They're also a great way to work the wrists," he adds.

These classic versions range in size from 4 to 15 pounds. At fogdog.com.

Polar Heart-Rate Monitor
Price: $60 to $400

When you're on the go or in the middle of a workout, check your pulse and track the calories you're burning with these watchlike devices. These can be found at most major sporting goods retailers. Check your local sporting goods store for availability or where you can buy one.

Spa-2-Go Portable Spa
Price: $899

Need to soothe sore muscles? This inflatable soaker is a grown-up version of a backyard kiddie pool. "It's a great little hot tub for folks on a budget," says Morgan. At backyardking.com.

GoFit Yoga Kit
Price: $35

Like all gymnasts, the Hamms do intensive stretching -- a routine that mimics yoga -- to stay limber. This kit includes a mat as well as a yoga brick and straps to help you master a more difficult Heron pose. At gofit.net.

GoFit 65-Centimeter Burst-Resistant Exercise Ball
Price: $30

The twins agree: Inflatable balls like this are especially good for sit-ups and other exercises that strengthen the muscles in the stomach and back -- crucial for balance, alignment and posture. The ball comes with an instructional DVD. At gofit.net.

And the winner is...Paul Hamm! Paul is this years winner of the AAU Sullivan Award. Yeah Paul!

"Oh, this is such a huge honor," he said before turning to congratulate the other seven finalists in attendance Wednesday night. "It's just great to be one of the Sullivan Award winners."

Hamm beat out previous winner Michael Phelps as well as Olympians Carly Patterson, Natalie Coughlin, Cael Sanderson, Andre Ward, Jeremy Wariner and Steven Lopez for the award, which Phelps won last year before going on to claim six gold medals and two bronzes at the Athens Olympics — matching the record for most medals at a single games. Southern Cal quarterback Matt Leinart also was a finalist, along with Elisha Au (karate)."
