Images: Paul Hamm Keeps His Gold Metal

September 30, 2004
Ruling Over Paul Hamm's Gold Due after October 11
A decision on whether or not Paul Hamm keeps his Olympic gold medal won't come until after Oct. 11, the Court of Arbitration for Sport said Wednesday. Hamm won the all-around gold medal at the Athens Olympics, but South Korean Yang Tae-young wants the CAS to change the results because of a scoring error committed by three judges. During an 111/2-hour meeting Monday, Yang, who won the bronze medal, asked the CAS to move him up to first place.
"If they determine by the rules of gymnastics I should give back my medal, I will," Hamm said.
There is no appeal of the CAS judgment. Yang was wrongly docked 0.1 points for the level of difficulty of his parallel bars routine in the all-around. He ended up 0.049 points behind Hamm. The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) reviewed the meet the next day and suspended the three judges, but FIG officials said they wouldn't change the results because the South Koreans didn't file a protest in time. Then FIG president Bruno Grandi wrote a letter to Hamm asking him to surrender the gold medal voluntarily. That, in part, prompted the South Korean federation to appeal to the CAS. *SI (Sports Illistrated)

Paul testified on behalf of his medal today in Switzerland. The judges listened to all sides of the case and said they will reach a verdict in the next two weeks. The FIG has announced that the code needs to be completly revised, if the revision of the code is approved, the new code will go into effect at the end of the 2005 season.

Also, Paul made his scheduled appearance on the Ellen Degeneres show today. He talked with Ellen and performed a handstand into a strength hold on a pommel hourse that they brought into the studio. My favorite part was when Ellen told Paul that he "has an incredable body." I have to agree. He was flatterd and I think he even blushed a little. Too cute.

Paul Hamm was scheduled to appear on the Dennis Miller show tonight however, he did not. All other scheduled guests did appear so it is by educated guess that Paul may have decided against the show for one reason or another, or something else may have happened. I don't know for sure but I will let you know as soon as I know. He is scheduled for the Ellen Degeneres show tomorrow on ABC and as far as I know he will make an appearence.

Morgan and Paul both appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno last night. For those who missed it, when Jay introduced Paul, Morgan came out instead of Paul. Jay then asked Morgan, thinking he was Paul, if they had ever "played the old switcharoo." Morgan chuckled and said "no, not until tonight." He then told Jay that he was actually Morgan and Paul was still in the back. So, they finally brought Paul out and talked to the both of them. Morgan has gone off somewhere to get some rest before the September 9 show of the Rock n' Roll tour which will be held in Columbus, Ohio.
Paul will stay in Los Angeles for a few extra days and appear on a variety of television show, including Dennis Miller Tuesday, September 7, Ellen D., September 8 or 9, not sure of the exact date. Different sources are giving me different dates so check your local listings for the exact date. And also E! Online (not sure when just yet but it will probably be before September 9) so keep checking back. Mellisa Rivers is taking Paul clothes shopping and then clubbing in LA. All to appear at sometime on E! Online.
